The Number of Families of Matter According to the currently accepted theory of fundamental particles and their interactions, three generations, or families, of elementary particles exist in nature. The most familiar of these families is the first generation, which includes the electron and the “up” and “down” quarks that form the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. German-born American physicist and Nobel laureate Jack Steinberger and American physicist Gary J. Feldman participated in experiments in the late 1980s that confirmed the existence of only three families of elementary particles. They described their work in a 1991 Scientific American article.
