UNIVERSITY EDUCATION SHOULD INSTILL PRACTICAL SKILLS IN STUDENTS - VC
The Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof. Noah Yusuf has urged all tertiary institutions in the country to focus more on practical skills acquisition.
Prof. Yusuf stated this in a programme titled “Meet the Press” on Monday, July 12, 2021 to mark his one year anniversary in office.
The Vice-Chancellor revealed that the proliferation of universities in Nigeria is a necessary development, most especially, as a pragmatic response to upsurge in the number of prospective candidates yearning for university education, which is over stretching the capacity of the existing universities in Nigeria. He added that over 1.2 million candidates sat for the 2021 University Matriculation Examination (UTME) but the existing admission placement on average is less than 450,000. To him, private universities should be complementary to the public ones to make university education accessible to teeming Nigerian youths that are desirous of quality education.
The Vice-Chancellor reiterated that the Federal Government needs to provide financial and logistic support to private universities. He, however, said that the present administration of Al-Hikmah University has been able to accomplish some projects within the past one year without support from the government. According to him, some of these are: flowering project, establishment of income generation ventures, information technology-driven administration, academic programmes accreditation, community outreach, inauguration of Al-Hikmah University Special Road Marshal Unit, establishment of Al-Hikmah online radio, sustenance and upgrading of existing facilities, hostel development, staff welfare/development, regular payment of staff salaries and allowances, students welfare packages, innovative programmes like expansion of academic programmes, facilitating commencement of inaugural lecture deliveries and publication of university-wide journal.
The Registrar, Dr. Rasheedat Modupe Oladimeji, in her closing remarks congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on the recorded achievement and assured him of the management's support.
The Registrar further expressed her appreciation to the entire management team of the University for their Contributions to the success recorded by the administration of the current Vice- Chancellor in the last one year.
